Love Never Dies

A young great Mathematician was in deep love with a princess of Sparta. The king got to know of their affair and awarded him sentence to death. The young mind was asked to state one statement which was either true or false. If it was true then he would be chopped else he would be hanged. But the genius escaped the death. The king knowing the enormous wisdom of the young mind united the lovers. The king also gave half of his kingdom and made him the king of that land.

The statement stated by the young mathematician had to be either true or false, and still he escaped death. How? How?? How???
