The Last Person

What are your answers for the following simple questions?
i) In a running race, if a person overtakes the second person, what will be his position?
ii) In a running race, if a person overtakes the last person, what will be his position?

In the above questions, the second person means the person who is currently in the second position. Similarly, the last person means the person who is currently in the last position.

NOTE: ‘The questions are very simple’ does not mean ‘The answers are very simple.’ Think on all possible scenarios.
